Volume I - Blue-green boards are moderately bumped and rubbed to extremities with some loss at the corners and foot of the spine, some staining to show. Both boards are a bit hinged but still well attached. Bright gilt titles to front board with gilt stamped illustration of a sailing ship titled “The Fram”. Interior is clean excepting the occasional small stain and bit of foxing and a 6cm by 2.5cm semi circular moisture stain to the bottom of the frontis. Tissue guard to the frontis sports a short tear. Colour plate no.iv is loose. Blank page in front of the fold-out maps at the rear has a large piece missing. Maps are intact. Volume II - Blue-green boards are moderately bumped and rubbed to extremities. Some shelfwear to show. Head and tail of spine are rubbed with small chips and short tears to the head. Front board is slightly hinged, rear board is moderately hinged but still well attached. Gilt titles to spine are very slightly faded. Bright gilt titles to front board with gilt stamped illustration of a man and dog team pulling a sledge titled “Northwards through the drift snow”. Interior is clean excepting the occasional small stain and bit of foxing. Tissue guard on frontis. Previous owner’s neat name in ink to the ffep. Fold-out maps to the rear have been re-attached and show a few short tears and a bit of chipping to one edge. Dr. Fridtjof Nansen was an explorer, scientist, inventor and a world class athlete. His water colour illustrations painted on the expedition and included in the books are quite stunning. He and his entire crew returned safely some three years later to great acclaim for the successful voyage. These two volumes are in Good Plus to Very Good condition.
