Considered by many to be a turning point in WWII, American intelligence launched an attack on Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the master mind behind the attack on Pearl Harbor, with the intent of killing him. A squadron of P-38 “Lightening” aircraft led by Major John W. Mitchell carried out the attack, with Lt. Rex T. Barber credited with the fatal shot that brought down Yamamoto’s aircraft.
