Ex-Library of the “Mercantile Library Philadelphia”. Published in 1796 by P. Byrn, No.108, and J. Rice, No.111, Grafton-Street, Dublin. 459 pp. Rebound (by the library?) in a plain green cloth board (hardcover) with gilt titles to spine. Five maps are present, some detached, all with some splits at the seams and some with tape repairs, but complete and intact. Map tipped in opposite of the title page. Plates I, II, IV and V absent. Library stamps periodically throughout, including a “pin-point” stamp to the title page. Occasional marginalia, including the maps, in pencil. Text block is split at the centre with some loose pages but actually quite solid. Some foxing and light soiling throughout. Clearly this copy would benefit from a good bookbinder or conservator, but still sits nicely on the shelf. Hearne was the first European to explore the Arctic Ocean and convey detailed information about Canada’s first inhabitants. Priced accordingly.
